MIAMI, FL (National Presse) – A possible second hurricane could be brewing in the southern Atlantic as the National Hurricane Center (NHC) issues outlooks. Today, the NHC has confirmed they are targeting the Lesser Antilles for a possible duplicate tropical system.
An 80% chance of a tropical cyclone forming through the next week poses a target for storm and hurricane chasers. The outlook issues by the NHC indicates that a tropical depression is expected.
From the NHC
Near the Lesser and Greater Antilles (AL98):
Shower and thunderstorm activity continues to increase in
association with a tropical wave located roughly midway between the
Cabo Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles. Environmental conditions
appear conducive for gradual development of this system during the
next several days while it moves westward to west-northwestward at
15 to 20 mph across the central tropical Atlantic. A tropical
depression is likely to form by the early to middle part of next
week while the system approaches and then moves near or over the
Lesser Antilles, and interests there should monitor the progress of
this system. Then, the system is forecast to move generally
west-northwestward and could approach portions of the Greater
Antilles by the middle to latter part of next week.
Model Suggestions
The Global Forecast System (GFS) has been aiming west and east, making a target much harder to track. Currently, we see confidence in the models producing a tropical cyclone near Puerto Rico within the next 5-days or less
The “euro” model shows a tropical cyclone forming as well, however, it appears to stay in the Atlantic ocean as of right now. Things can always change however.
