MIAMI, FL (National Presse) – Five people have been killed as a result of then Hurricane Debby. The storm is moving northeast into the Atlantic, but officials fear that the storm could cause much more damage, and deaths.
Hurricane Debby made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida, similar to where Idalia made landfall in 2023. A young 13-year-old boy was killed when a large tree fell on top of him in his mobile home. This occurred near Gainesville.
Officials later confirmed that a driver of a semi-truck veered off a road and into a flooded canal. When emergency responders got access to the cab, it was apparent that he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities also released details a woman and a 12-year-old were killed Sunday evening when they lost control of their vehicle and crashed. Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, stated the vehicle hydroplaned due to excessive rainfall.
Just recently, a 19-year-old man died after a tree fell on top of him in southern Georgia. Five people have been killed in the storm’s path, and officials fear more could become victims due to the excessive rainfall projected.
Over 12-inches of rain is expected in the Charleston, SC area soon. Law enforcement and local governments have initiated a curfew starting tonight.
The mayor of Charleston, South Carolina, issued a city-wide curfew starting at 11 p.m. ET as officials prepare for an anticipated 10 to 12 inches of rain.
During a news conference on Monday, Cogswell said the rainfall is likely to occur between midnight and 10 a.m. ET Tuesday.
